School Districts

Behavior Intervention Services

Verdugo Hills Autism Project is a State-Certified Non-Public Agency, allowing us to provide services to public school districts. Services funded by school districts are always provided pursuant to an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Our goal at VHAP is to meet each individual student’s specific needs in collaboration with school staff to support a positive school experience.

Our team is skilled in assessing clients’ needs across multiple developmental domains and in identifying maladaptive behaviors that hinder their ability to function optimally within their school environment. Through a functional behavioral assessment, the purpose or functions driving the child’s behaviors are determined in order to develop a comprehensive positive behavior support plan (sensory, escape/avoidance, attention, access) that emphasizes teaching and reinforcement of replacement behaviors. We also address the client’s emotional regulation which may be affecting their behaviors and assist them in learning appropriate coping and self-monitoring strategies.

Depending on the client’s needs, we implement systematic and structured procedures such as  task analyses, reinforcement schedules, self-monitoring programs and augmentative communication systems to develop the client’s competence and independence. Additionally, challenging behaviors can be decreased with strategies that are safe and non-violent. Our staff has been certified in The Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) program. The NCI program uses the safest techniques possible to reduce the risk of injury. The training program emphasizes the safety and security of the child and uses a framework for problem solving crisis situations.

We use Positive Behavior Support Strategies to teach clients:

  • Coping & Self-Regulation
  • Compliance
  • Attention to Task
  • Social Communication
  • Adaptive & Play Skills
